I say Copper is the best but not cheap.

Black pipe next, with proper filtration at the end of the runs as needed.

Another alternative I saw mentioned here is Pex. I'd run that before PVC. I don't think it's technically approverd for compressed air, but if it does fail you won't get the shrapnel that the hard PVC would give you.

What about galvanized? and it's probably more than copper but they have stainless too.

Out shop is plumbed with galvanized. 3 booths, 3 blast cabinets, 1pot blaster, and probably a dozen air chucks. It's a mix of 2", 1-1/2", 1", and some 3/4". Most of it came from Lowes or Menards. Easy to assemble and modify later.
